I take pleasure in the words "mixed media" because they seem both all-encompassing and yet very precise in describing how I approach art. I literally do mix media, assembling incongruent materials to create a metaphoric link between different points in time, between the physical and immaterial -- and ultimately, I hope -- between myself and the viewer. It is in this process of mixing that I consider, both visually and symbolically, the relationship between elements of personal and universal human experience. I find satisfaction on many levels mixing my art from the media that surrounds me. Perhaps this experience is similar to what Robert Rauschenberg felt when he said, "I think a picture is more like the real world when it's made of the real world." Using the real world as source material has been a lifelong fascination for me. Although I use a great variety of materials, common themes and images continue to work their way through the content of my pieces. The most elemental is an ongoing contemplation of spiritual and psychological questions, which I like to think of as unsolvable dreamlike puzzles, or "visual koans." The experience of handling and manipulating the materials I work with feeds my creative process by evoking tactile and intuitive responses that deepen or broaden my original concept. When I'm working, I'm always walking the line between order and chaos - trying to stay true and focused on my intention while being open to the spontaneous guidance that comes from the spirit of the materials engaged and the unique energy present at the moment of creation. |
